It’s just toward find yourself it starts to break down, although slap-upwards finale rescues they on ‘red’. Excellently staged and you may intelligently dialogued, it’ll have zero great problem inside traditions off their very unattractive label.” [ 8 ]

The newest film’s copywriter and movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a great multidimensional chess video game, to have mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) has worked during the gambling establishment and you will old an excellent corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic script, this new cast’s suavely regulated body language from like and you will threat, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may fashionably cocky pictures (and his governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet detailed spectacle a hidden antique of one’s style.” [ 10 ]

Whilst spot observe a familiar pattern, the fresh new characterizations was fresh and the shows good enough to overbalance. Its generally an issue of viewing Mr. Powell undergo his paces fashionably when you’re a massive throw out-of stars and actresses bring your standard assistance. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable little lady whom brings forth the finest in him and Ellen Drew is the sleek and you can slinky vixen exactly who will get him on jams. Thomas Gomez are greasy as the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb really does another in a position concert tour since the a weary cops inspector just who in the long run closes the way it is. A great amount of consuming and you may puffing is done from the every worried.” [ several ]
